The Cichlid Breeding Process

When considering cichlid breeding then you should do some research before embarking on this wonderful and interesting breeding process. It is important that you are able to recognise enough about the cichlid fish in order to successfully breed your cichlids, and this is true of any species of fish. Some cichlid enthusiasts will breed fish for profit and if you are planning on selling off the offspring then you will need to know how you can ensure that the cichlid will produce the best standard of fry so that you will be able to sell them. Here are a few tips for helping you to begin cichlid breeding.

It is worth remembering that cichlids can be quite aggressive because this is what they are like in the wild when they have to protect themselves against predators and their temperament is also quite violent when it comes to breeding as well. The male cichlid will often try to attack and chase away the female cichlid directly after the breeding process has ended and if you haven’t supplied plenty of hiding spaces in the breeding tank, then the female could end up being killed by the male. If you notice the male being a little bit too aggressive, then you might want to think about removing the female if you notice that she is getting banged around a bit too much. Always ensure that the cichlids have enough hiding spaces when they are breeding for this purpose in particular.

If you have read up on cichlids and breeding then you will know that there are two forms of breeders. Mouth brooders and substrate brooders. When it comes to mating your cichlids, you will be interested to learn just what type of brooder your cichlid turns out to be. In order to spot the difference, you will need to watch carefully during the breeding process. Mouth brooders will scoop the eggs up either during the spawning or straight after the process and will keep the eggs in their mouth until the fry have hatched. Substrate brooders will often lay their eggs on level surfaces either in full view, or hidden in cavities which are also why there should be plenty of hiding spots in the tank. You will find that breeding cichlid fish is a fascinating process which will rivet you to the spot. Always remember to do your homework before you attempt to breed your cichlids so that you can know what to expect and how to help look after the offspring.
