Saltwater Fish Care: Learning the Ropes

Many saltwater fish enthusiasts will tell you just how difficult it can be to keep a saltwater aquarium, but they will also be quick to tell you just how much you will get out of keeping a saltwater aquarium in your home of office. The many different species of fish which you can keep together is amazing, by keeping a saltwater fish tank you will have all the colors of the rainbow in one aquarium! But when it comes to saltwater fish care, it is important that you think about everything which goes into looking after these fish so that they survive and thrive. You need to be dedicated before taking on a saltwater aquarium, and if you do not think that you have what it takes then you shouldn’t consider owning a saltwater aquarium.

If you are just starting out, then there are many items you will require before you first purchase any saltwater fish. You will need a tank, obviously this is the most important piece of your equipment and the size of the tank depends on the amount of fish you are planning to keep and the species. It is always best before you purchase your aquarium, to plan out which fish you will be keeping so that you can have a good idea of the size of the tank you will need. If you are in any doubt about the size, then ask a member of staff in your local pet store and they should be able to help you out.

Once you have your tank you will also require a few other things and these items include; sand or grit for the bottom of the aquarium, salt mix, a heater, a protein skimmer, a hydrometer and most importantly you will require a pH kit so that you are able to vigilantly monitor the levels in your aquarium so that you can give the best saltwater fish care.

When beginning your saltwater aquarium for the first time, you should try to introduce brackish live bearing fresh water fish to get yourself started. Once you begin to add bigger, more aggressive fish you must make sure that you remove these smaller fish before hand. Always make sure that the tank has been properly cleaned and cycled before introducing any new fish because there might be unwanted parasites and bacteria in the tank which could harm your fish.
