Once you have bred your Koi fish, then you will be left with hundreds, sometimes thousands of sticky tiny eggs to look after. When keeping Koi fish in the same tank as the eggs, the parents will often try to eat them so once the breeding process has been completed, it is recommended that you should remove the male and female to separate tanks to give them time to recover before placing them back into the communal pond. The spawning smell on female Koi can last for up to twenty four hours and if she is placed back into the pond with other males before she has had the chance to recover, she could end up getting hurt by the other Koi.
When it comes to looking after the fry, then for the first day they are able to survive on their own yolk sac, but after the first day they will need to be fed around four of five times each day for up to three months. Food which you should feed the fry includes algae and infusorians. When the fry are a little bit older you can supplement this food for newly hatched brine shrimp. As the fry begin to grow and thrive you can begin to switch them over to Koi food pellets and you should make sure that the water you are keeping them in remains in tip top condition because frequent feeding of the fry can put a strain on the water so it needs constant up keep.
It is quite difficult to raise all of the fry in a spawning session and usually it is recommended to only breed half of the fry, however you can remove the other half and keep them in another tank or a pond because the breeding tank will become too over crowded if you keep them altogether. Koi breeding experts also recommend that you sort out the Koi fry for quality once they have grown a little bit more and only keep the high quality of fry.
