Discus: The Shy Aquarium Friend

Discus fish are actually one of three species of fresh water fishes which originate from the Amazon River. They are a very popular aquarium fish because they are known for their peaceful and shy tendencies and they are also quite easy to look after and to breed if you are interested in breeding fish. However, because discus fish are quite shy, they are particularly sensitive to disturbance and lack of protection.

If you are planning on keeping a discus fish aquarium, then to provide your fish friend with a healthy and happy habitat, it is imperative that you keep the tank in a quite room of your home of office away from loud traffic and loud noises which might frighten the fish. It is also important that when you keep discus fish, you think about their living environment. Because they are shy, it is important that you provide your new aquarium friends with plenty of places to hide in the tank, such as tank ornaments and plenty of real tank plants. This will ensure that you discus fish are kept happy and can thrive in his new home.

Discus fish are shy, but they do enjoy some company in their tank with them. But you cannot put just any fish in with a discus, they are quite picky about who they choose to coexist with! But one of the best cohabitants is the angelfish. But because both species of fish are large, it is important that you make sure that your tank is big enough to hold both fish so that they will not feel threatened in close quarters. When deciding whether or not you would like to introduce an angelfish in with your discus, you should also bare in mind that angelfish can introduce parasites and diseases into the tank which can affect the discus so you have to be quite careful when picking a friend for your discus to live with.

It is important that your discus fish remains in a calm and peaceful environment, because when discus fish become stressed they stop producing their important stress coats which can slow down and even stop their immune system which will leave them vulnerable to diseases. Another fish that will make a good inhabitant with your discus is the common goldfish; although it does depend on the attitude of the goldfish and there is a chance that one or both fish could end up dying… sounds awful doesn’t it?! But if in doubt, keep your discus fish in a separate aquarium to any other fish that you might keep and then you can be sure that you are lavishing enough attention on each of your aquarium friends!
