Discus Fish: How to Keep Them Happy

Discus fish are typically shy fish and quite a fragile species of fish and so is it is good to remember when trying to keep you discus fish happy, that they are sensitive to noise and stressful environments and it is best to keep their tank in a quite place of the house or your office. You can keep other fish with the discus fish, the optimal cohabitants of discus fish would be angelfish and goldfish.  However, there is a strong chance that one or both of the species might not survive the cohabitation and so you might need to think about keeping discus fish in a different tank in order to keep your discus fish happy.

When keeping discus fish happy and healthy, there is a lot of information that you need to know. First of all, you will need a tank that will be large enough, bue to the fact that that discus fish are a larger species and so a 20 gallon tank or more should be sufficient to keep your fish content. You also need to add some potted plants and aquarium ornaments in your tank to allow the discus fish to hide because they frighten easily, as well as a filter pump to keep the water fresh and clean.

When keeping you new friend happy, you need to keep the pH level of the tank at around 6 and the temperature of the water should be about 86 degrees Fahrenheit because the discus fish come from the warm waters of the Amazon River and are used to this kind of water so it is good to try to re create their natural environment.

Discus fish have a large and rather varied diet. You can feed them blood worms, brine shrimp either frozen or fresh; live white worms and tetra pieces. A varied diet not only keeps you discus friend happy but it will also provide them with all of the vitamins that they need to stay healthy.

A discus fish tank should have its water changed around once a week if you want to maintain the health and happiness of your discus, if you are trying to breed your fish then you should do a small water change each day as this helps to give the fish big appetites and in turn increases their chances of spawning.

When it comes to lighting, many people say that discus fish do not like bright lighting, but this is not true. However, in order to show off the various colors of the discus fish then you might want to keep quite a dark aquarium so that you will be able to see them better. All of these things will help to ensure that you keep your discus fish happy and healthy and they will live for a long time if kept in good conditions.
