Many cichlid enthusiasts will be quick to tell you that cichlids are difficult to look after because they need constant care and monitoring just like the discus fish. What makes cichlids quite difficult to look after is the fact that they are quite an aggressive species of fish. This is because they have highly developed brooding aspects and will often try to protect themselves or show aggression towards smaller fish as they would usually do in the wild, when it comes to cichlid care you should always take this aspect of their nature into consideration, and think about the amount of time and dedication you will have to give to these fish. If you are still certain that you wish to keep cichlid fish, then there are a few things you will need to know.
The first think you need to know about cichlid care is what type of community you should put them in. Dwarf cichlids can be kept together as long as there is enough room in the tank, and usually if you are going to keep cichlids you should have around a twenty gallon tank at least. You should only place cichlids in with fish that share the same type of characteristics and the same size. If you keep a large fish in with cichlids then you will be able to keep the cichlid fish in check, keeping their aggressiveness at a minimum.
Catfish are good to keep with cichlids, but if you are in any doubt then you should always talk to a specialist in the area, such as an employee of your local pet store who will be able to answer any questions you might have about keeping and caring for cichlids. You can also do you own research; there are plenty of helpful websites on the internet which hold a treasure trove of brilliant information about cichlid fish.
When decorating a cichlid fish tank you should always ensure that there are plenty of spaces for the cichlids to hide such as caves and over turned flower pots and you should avoid putting real or fake plants in the tank because most species of cichlid will dig them up and this can harm the fish. Always ensure that the water in the tank is kept clean which means that you should be constantly completing water changes and you should clean the whole tank out at least once every ten days to maintain good cichlid care.
