Breed Koi Fish: For Beginners

Many owners of Koi fish have attempted to breed their pets unsuccessfully. However, Koi fish are not difficult fish to breed but you do need to do a little bit of research before you try to breed Koi fish. It is not just a case of putting your fish together and hoping for the best, to breed Koi fish you need to have patience and you have to have the right set up for any chance of success when it comes to breeding these wonderful creatures.

Because Koi fish can grow to quite a large size, many find breeding Koi fish can be a little bit more difficult than other species. In order to have the best chance of success then you need to begin with good quality Koi parents and this means that they should always be of the highest standards when you purchase them and you should always keep the bloodlines of the Koi clean so that you will have the best quality fry which will be easier to sell off if that is what you are planning to do. When breeding Koi fish, the age of the Koi is very important and plays a large role in the process. Young female Koi tend to produce thin shelled eggs which often do not survive the first stages of the spawning process and older female Koi will produce hard shelled eggs which have the opposite effect and the male sperm will not be able to penetrate the shells. So when picking your Koi fish, you should remember that the best age for breeding is around four and five years old.

When you have your parents who you are planning to breed, then you should make sure to separate them from any other fish by keeping them in a separate pond or an aquarium for around a month. This will give them time to get into a good spawning condition and during this time you should ensure that you are feeding them well so that this can give them the best possible chance of producing offspring. The best time of the year for attempting to breed Koi fish is when the temperature difference through the day is at its smallest and during a full moon period is usually best because this will help to trigger the Koi fish into spawning.
