Betta Fish: Feeding Habits

The betta fish or the Siamese fighting fish make excellent pets and a brilliant addition to anyone just beginning a new aquarium. They are generally quite easy to look after, as long as you do a little bit of research before you go and buy your fish, and they are beautiful to look at as well. There are many different species, sizes and colors of betta fish, but their beautiful and delicate fins are what make the betta stand out from other fish. They can have all of the colors of the rainbow, and watching a betta fish swim around an aquarium will really mesmerize you and any guests who come to visit your home. Betta fish really are a great addition to any fish tank.

But what exactly do betta fish eat, and how often should you feed them? Most people know how to keep a gold fish; caring for betta fish is easy, all you have to do is to feed them a few flakes of food every now and again and keep the tank clean, however the feeding habits of the betta fish is slightly more complicated than that and they have a much more varied diet than your average fresh water fish.

That said, betta fish are not huge eaters but they do need a very varied diet to make sure that they get all of the vitamins that they need to thrive and stay healthy. If you feed your betta a healthy and varied diet, then they will be happier and less likely to succumb to parasites and diseases. It is also important to feed betta fish well when you are planning to breed them because betta fish need full bellies in order to begin the spawning process.

You can feed betta fish many different things. You should make sure they have a mixed diet and this can include floating flake food which you can buy from all good pet stores, as well as fresh and frozen food including freeze dried blood worms, frozen brine shrimp and live black worms. This may sound a little bit off putting, but you should only really feed your betta fresh and frozen food every so often. The main diet you should be feeding your betta fish is betta pellets. These are small, round pellets that are food for most of the betta species and they are made from crude fat, crude protein, crude ash, crude fiber, moisture, certain vitamins and phosphorus which ensures that the betta are getting everything that they need in their diet to remain healthy and happy. You should feed betta fish once a day or once every other day in small quantities.
