When the breeding tank is ready and the angelfish pair is together then it will be around this time that you will see the signs of the spawning process. When angelfish breed, your role is to take a backseat and simply oversee the breeding to make sure that both fish are happy and healthy throughout the process. It is mainly up to the angelfish whether the breeding will take place or not and this is where being patient really comes in! Once the breeding tank is all set up, your fish are ready to begin breeding and you should ensure that you do your homework on angelfish breeding so you know just what to expect and how to ensure success.
At the beginning of spawning, the fish will choose an area of the tank where they are planning to spawn and will clean this area with their teeth. It is at this time you will be able to sex each angelfish because they will show their ovipositors. The male ovipositor is usually pointed and smaller than the females so you will be able to tell if you have a male and a female in the tank. Even if you have two females, they will often reproduce the spawning process even though the eggs will not become fertilized. After three days of cleaning the tank with their teeth, the angelfish will spawn and this involves the female laying rows of eggs on the spawning site and the male will follow up behind to fertilize the eggs. Afterwards you will be lefts with as many as 1200 angelfish eggs. The first day is the most important because it is during this period when the outer layer of the shell will harden and if the egg is infertile it will turn white, if it is healthy it will become translucent.
It is possible for you to try hatching the angelfish eggs yourself, in which case you will need to either remove the eggs or the fish from the tank. This can be a gruelling process which will take a lot of care and dedication from you; it is usually best to try leaving the eggs with the parents and ensure that their tank is as undisturbed as possible. The water temperature should be kept at around 80 degrees and the water should be dark so try adding a blue solution which will not harm the fish or the eggs.
