Angelfish can make wonderful additions to any aquarium and they are recognised by enthusiasts by their elongated dorsal and anal fins. They care colourful and have striped bodies and it is because of their spectacular appearance that they are so popular with people who are starting new aquariums, or even as an addition to an existing aquarium. Before you begin your angelfish aquarium, there are a few things you need to learn in order to be able to look after the angelfish correctly and to maintain their health so that they will be with you for many years to come.
Before you purchase your angelfish, you will need a tank to keep them in, and you should consider what size the tank needs to be. When trying to work out what size aquarium your angelfish will requite, you should look at the ratio of angelfish to the gallons of water that the tank holds, for instance if you have one gallon of water for each small angelfish, then if you wanted to keep three angelfish then you would need at least a three gallon tank. This is different when it comes to the size of the angelfish; if you are keeping fully grown adult angelfish then you will need around four gallons to each fish. So if you wanted to keep three adult angelfish then your tank would need to be at least twelve gallons or more. You should use this ratio when purchasing your angelfish aquarium, but if you are not sure then ask and employee at the pet store.
Some people breed angelfish for a living, it can be a great way to earn a bit of extra cash, but if you are planning on breeding then you will need at least a fifteen gallon aquarium if you are not keeping the fry with the parents, and if you are going to keep the parents and the fry together then the tank will at least double in size. When you are looking after your angelfish aquarium you should always keep a note of the water temperature. Angelfish usually survive best in a water temperature of around 80 degrees when you are getting them ready for breeding, but if you are simply keeping them as pets then you can drop to around 74 to 78 degrees which is acceptable to maintain the health of your fish. Invest in an aquarium thermometer to check water temperatures.
